Regardless if you are rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, both teams will be fighting for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is the trophy awarded each year to the winning team of the National Football League’s championship game, the Super Bowl. The trophy is named in honor of NFL coach Vince Lombardi, who led the Green Bay Packers to victories in the first two Super Bowl games.
The trophy has been the coveted symbol for the winning team since 1967. Tiffany & Co. designed the first trophy and continues to hand craft each one every year to this day.
The trophy is made of beautiful sterling silver with a regulation-size football sitting atop the base and weighs approximately 7 pounds with an overall height of 22 inches. The entire process, crafted by silversmiths, takes four months in the company’s Rhode Island workshop. The detail and intricacy that goes into creating the trophy is an honored tradition.
As the story goes, the trophy was originally sketched on a cocktail napkin during a lunch between then NFL commissioner, Pete Rozelle and Tiffany Vice President, Oscar Reidner.
During the victory ceremony, you’ll notice that the statue is engraved only with “Vince Lombardi Trophy” and the NFL shield. Upon completion of the ceremony, the trophy is returned to the Tiffany & Co. workshop where it’s engraved with the winning team’s name and “Super Bowl LV Champions.”
We will know soon enough which team’s name will be engraved on this year’s trophy. Enjoy the game!
