The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel, is classic and traditional in decor, with flourishes of sensuality to echo its dramatic inhabitants and hushed liaisons. The hotel is on an intimate scale, at times almost feeling like a private residence.
The house next to it in Pont Street, Number 21, was the home of Lillie Langtry. She sold it to the hotel in 1895 on the understanding that she could live and entertain there for free. It now serves as a private entrance for guests of the hotel, with her original mosaic floor and staircase still intact. Her dining room forms part of the hotel’s Adam Handling restaurant.
The hotel overlooks the huge private haven of Cadogan Place Gardens. As a fabulous perk, as if they were Chelsea residents, guests get keys to its gates, and can picnic, stroll and play tennis there on its two courts.
The staff are memorably and beautifully outfitted in uniforms that echo both the Chelsea style of Mary Quant and the Swinging Sixties (bold checks), and that of Oscar Wilde (tweed; velvet jackets). A top team is on hand to provide excellent service.
There are 54 total rooms and 3 signature suites in the Cadogan. They are homey and stylish with subtle luxury. The classic decor is respectful of the Edwardian townhouse’s history. The Lillie Langtry signature suite is romantic, feminine, and delicate. The Oscar Wilde Suite is where the playwright was arrested; a replica of his famous velvet blazer is in the wardrobe. The Edward VII suite is where the king met repeatedly with British actress Lillie Langtry. Children are welcome but there are no particular amenities for them.
There’s an elegant salon for breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktails. The Cadogan Bar is a cozy spot to grab a stool for a cocktail and feel like a local. The scene here is a sophisticated one, with excellent opportunities to eat and drink in a prestigious Chelsea address. Enjoy classic European cuisine at The LaLee restaurant onsite. You can also experience a Picnic in the Cadogan Gardens; the hotel will arrange a secluded spot and serve up afternoon tea, alfresco style, complete with plush blankets, cutlery and glasses. Perfect for a few long lazy hours under the sun.
The gym is small but is outfitted cardio machines and free weights. You’ll find tennis courts in Cadogan Place Gardens as an alternative workout. There is not a formal spa but a spa suite offering massages and treatments.
The hotel sits seamlessly alongside Chelsea’s chic boutiques and mansions. The area is primarily an affluent shopping and residential area. The Cadogan is close to the Sloane Square shopping district and Saatchi Art Gallery. Other attractions are a short stroll away, such as Hyde Park, Harrod’s, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and the Science Museum.
