If you want the perfect weekend getaway, head to Newport, Rhode Island. More specifically to the Chanler at Cliff Walk.
Built in 1873 by a New York Congressman as a Summer cottage for his family, the Chanler at Cliff Walk is the perfect setting for a boutique luxury hotel. The hotel was renovated beginning in 2000. The goal was to keep as much of the original building as possible. To keep the historic feel, there is no elevator. There are 12 rooms on the interior of the building spread out on the 2nd and 3rd floors. There are an additional 8 exterior rooms on the property. Some have a private deck while others enjoy a hot tub and private garden.
The room designs are based on the favorite global travel locations of family that owns The Chanler. Each room is unique in décor and theme. The specific pieces in each room were sourced from the part of the world related to its décor theme.
Lani, the owner is also the General Manager. She is on site daily and loves being a part of ensuring an enjoyable experience for the guests. She personally hand writes each card for the guest rooms with a welcome message.
The grandeur of the room and hotel is felt once you step foot on the property. It takes you back to the days of the gilded times.
Every small detail has been thought of with the guest’s enjoyment in mind. Complimentary car service is available for guests to go into town. The Chanler has a partnership with the Tennis Hall of Fame if you desire to workout in their gym facility or get in some court time. It is a 5-minute drive from the hotel. It is also walkable if you prefer.
Cara, the onsite restaurant not only has a spectacular view of the ocean but the food is delicious. The farm to table meals are made with love by Chef Jacob. He studied and worked all over the world but chose to come home to Newport to work at Cara. Chef Jacob personally came to the table and explained the ingredients in my lobster cobb salad and where the local fresh ingredients were sourced. This is just one example of the small touches that add to your dining experience and the overall familial vibe of your stay.
The Chanler did an outstanding job of handling social distancing and keeping their guests safe while in the Covid pandemic. Each guest receives a pre-stay call with the ability to request which amenities you want in your room. This ensures everything is sterilized and safe. I requested a coffee maker, ironing board, iron and a notepad and pen. All were delivered safely after being sterilized.
Another added bonus of staying at The Chanler is you are situated at the beginning of the Cliff Walk. It is a MUST to walk along the Cliff Walk. It is approximately two miles from the hotel to the Breakers but worth every step. Whether you take your walk at sunset, sunrise or mid-day, it is magnificent. If you choose to continue on the walk beyond the Breakers and go to the end, it would be approximately 6 ½ miles. The Chanler is also walking distance to all things Newport in the downtown area. Or just grab an Adirondack chair on the great lawn and relax by the ocean.
There are plenty of shops, restaurants and storied history in the town of Newport. You can tour the mansions, hop on a boat and take in the ocean or visit one of the many seafood restaurants and enjoy the local fare. However you spend your time in Newport, it will be enjoyable.
