Self-care is an independent, very active and powerful choice to engage in activities that help gain and maintain an optimal level of overall health; mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. The way to achieve is as individual an experience as snowflakes falling on a winter’s day. Wellness and well-being mean different things to different people. Each of us needs to find the ways that make us feel positive, peaceful and productive.
This is a new and uncertain time for us all. Where no-one really knows what to expect one day to the next, not to mention what will be happening in a week or months’ time. We are deeply saddened to see the impact of the Covid 19 Virus on the world. It has effected jobs, family, friends and the world as a whole.
The good news is we are naturally resilient people. We will get through this. Things will get better. We will come out the other end stronger than ever with a new perspective on life. I think this is the perfect time to slow down, take the time to look inside and determine your priorities moving forward. How do you want your life to look post-virus? What will you change? What does your new “normal” look like?
Everyone will have a different approach and take a different amount of time to adapt, which means finding out what works best for you. I think it’s important to be aware of your feelings and those of your family, friends and coworkers as we all process things differently.
It’s important to check in with yourself. How are you feeling? What are you feeling? What steps can you take to deal with the things you are feeling?
For those working from home for the first time, this is an adjustment. Some people may love it, others may find it hard to be motivated at home.
I know being informed is important but try and limit to news time. Being bombarded with news can be overwhelming and add to anxiety. Try and focus on other things; work, hobbies, family time and most importantly yourself.
There are always things that are out of our control but now there is even more to deal with. The good news is there are also lots of things that we can control.
We can start with putting good habits in place to help build resilience and ensure your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing are at their peak.
Here are some tips that can help.
- Set up a routine. A consistent routine can be soothing and something you have control over.
- Expose yourself to fresh air and sunlight. It is okay and beneficial to go for a walk, spend time in your yard (if you have one) or just open a window.
- Move as much as you can throughout the day. I know it’s tempting to binge watch but try and have periods of activity too.
- Workout at home. It isn’t impossible. For example, you can jump rope, do jumping jacks or other activities in the house. There are tons of free online apps and Youtube videos that can guide you through a workout. Use this time to try a new workout.
- Practice mindfulness. What makes you feel at peace? Is it meditation, reading, cooking, coloring or doing a jigsaw puzzle? Whatever it is, welcome it into your life. Mindfulness means focusing on a task at hand. That helps stave off anxiety because you are focusing on what you are currently doing.
- Eat healthy and stay hydrated. This is essential for building immunity and staying healthy.
- Make getting good sleep a top priority. Have a bedtime routine that doesn’t involve screens and being consistent with your bedtime and the time you wake up each day.
- Limit screen time. Social media and the news can add to our anxiety. Yes, stay informed but not to the point of being overwhelmed.
- Stay connected with colleagues, friends, family and your local community. Support each other and help those that are more vulnerable and isolated than others.
- Above all, stay safe. Practice social distancing, wash your hands and take good care of yourself.
