Sticking with a healthy plan can be easy when you are at home and in your normal routine.
Traveling doesn’t have to throw a wrench into your healthy lifestyle. There are many ways to take advantage of your destination to change up your routine and make it fun!
You can add exercise into your day by hiking, taking a bike ride or going on a walking tour. It’s a great way to enjoy your surroundings without feeling like you are exercising.
I always try and book a hotel with a gym. If that isn’t possible or you are staying at an Airbnb, you can do squats, push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks or jump rope in your room. A jump rope fits easy into your luggage and doesn’t take up any room. YouTube workouts are great too. You can get a very effective workout whenever you want; all you need is an internet connection and a smartphone.
Try not to overindulge with food. I highly recommend trying local dishes but in moderation.
1. Start your day in a healthy way.
A healthy breakfast is what fuels your energy for the rest of the day and gets your metabolism pumping.
2. Make sure to stay hydrated.
Everyone knows drinking a lot of water is healthy for you, so make sure you keep that up while you’re traveling. I usually bring a water bottle from home and refill it throughout the day.
3. Take the stairs and get a good glute workout!
Yes, taking the stairs is a good workout but you are on vacation and want to relax. I get it. How about you take the stairs once or twice during your stay. Within reason of course. I mean if you are staying on the 42ndfloor of a hotel, no way. The rule I use is 15thfloor and below I take the stairs at least twice during my stay. Above the 15thfloor, I take the stairs for at least 10 flights and then hop on the elevator.
4. Always keeps snacks with you.
This doesn’t have to be hard. Throw a protein bar, almonds or a piece of fruit in your bag. If you are out and about and get hungry, you are prepared with a healthy snack.
5. Know Exactly What You’re Eating
If you aren’t sure what is in an entrée at a restaurant, ask. The server will be more than happy to tell you. They are used to people with health restrictions and allergies so don’t be afraid to speak up.
6. Incorporate the local environment whenever possible.
My favorite thing to do is incorporate the local environment into my workout. When I was in Turks and Caicos, I went paddle boarding, wind surfing and played tennis. The whole time I was focused on having fun. I didn’t even realize the workout I was getting. I never would have been able to go paddle boarding or wind surfing in New York City!
